Fremont–Winema National Forest in southern Oregon was formed in 2002 by combining the Fremont and Winema national forests, bringing together more than 2 million acres from the Cascade crest east to the California border. The Fremont portion traces back to the Goose Lake Forest Reserve of 1906 and was named for John C. Frémont, while Winema became a national forest in 1961 and honors Toby Riddle, the Modoc woman called Winema. Its lands include former Klamath Reservation territory, where tribal members retain rights to hunt, fish, trap, and gather. The forest is known for volcanic landscapes, old growth, diverse wildlife, wilderness areas, and year-round recreation.
