Lucette Diana Kensack was created in Hackensack by old-time resident and store owner Doad Schroeder, who in 1950 set out to give the village a gimmick and built the figure with a wooden frame, boards, metal lath, insulation, cement, sand, and genuine moose eyes. The colorful, sizable attraction became a summer-long drawing card for photographers and sightseers. In 1951, a national contest selected its name, with Lucette Diana Kensack submitted by a woman from Iowa. On June 27, 1952, Hackensack held the first Paul Bunyan Sweetheart Festival. In 1999, high wind toppled Lucette's head, but Hackensack residents repaired the damage, and Lucette continues to play a role in the town as well as in references in University of Minnesota annals and some school textbooks.
