Woolly Tops Mountain, in the eastern half of Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee, rises 5,482 feet as a broad east-west massif north of Laurel Top. Its northern face climbs about 3,500 feet above the Middle Prong of the Little Pigeon River, also called Greenbrier Creek. Although no official trail reaches the summit, it can be approached from Laurel Top by the Appalachian Trail and the connecting ridge. The mountain is also associated with a wartime-era tragedy: a Beechcraft Model 17 Staggerwing from Oak Ridge crashed there on August 12, 1944, and hikers did not discover the wreckage until January 19, 1947.
