Mather Field was named for 2Lt C. S. Mather, who was killed in 1918. In 1918 it served as a Pilot Training School. In the 1930s it was a Supply Depot. In the 1940s it was a Pilot and Nav School, and in the 1950s a Nav School. In the 1960s it was the site of a SAC Bomb Wing and AF Nav and EWO Schools. The base closed in 1993, and a VA Clinic started in 1998.
