Sheffield Island Light stands at the southern end of the Norwalk Islands in Connecticut, where it long marked the west side of the Norwalk River’s mouth on Long Island Sound. Established after land was sold to the federal government in 1826, the first light was completed in 1828 with Gershom Smith as keeper. The station was modernized in 1857, and in 1868 its original tower was replaced by the present Victorian limestone lighthouse dwelling. Its navigational importance declined after Greens Ledge Light opened in 1900, and it was deactivated in 1902. Restored after 1986, it now serves as a preserved historic site, museum, and relit landmark.
