At the northern end of Isle La Motte in Lake Champlain, this lighthouse helps mark the channel center with Windmill Point Light and reflects a broader effort to preserve historic navigational landmarks while keeping them in use. A light was established here by 1829, first from a tree or soon from a nearby stone house, then from a stone pyramid beacon lit in 1857. Because that arrangement was unreliable in storms, a permanent station followed. The present round cast-iron tower and keeper’s house were completed in 1881. After replacement by a separate beacon in the 1930s, the historic tower returned to active service with a solar-powered light in 2002.
