Faye, Naida, and Ruth Yost helped shape the evolution of women's sports in Pocatello. As young women, the sisters played on neighborhood softball teams, and after World War II, when girls' teams did not exist, Faye and Ruth joined boys' teams. When Coach Verl Thornock established girls' fastpitch softball in Pocatello, Faye and Ruth played any position, and their enthusiasm encouraged many other girls to join. This helped launch a new era of softball in the city, where men's and women's fastpitch became especially popular at Rainey Park. All three sisters eagerly tried many sports and looked for opportunities to share their love of athletics with other women. Beyond softball, Faye and Ruth excelled at golf and skiing, while Naida was an exceptional swimmer who also enjoyed tennis and golf. Ruth also served for years as a physical education teacher and coach in School District 25, helping lead girls into sports. Together, the sisters believed women should have the same opportunities as men to play sports, and that belief helped make Pocatello a sports center for all.
