In 1900 the U.S. census listed the Village population at 1,300 people, including foreign-born residents from Germany, Russia, Bohemia, Italy, England, Austria, Ireland, Wales, seventeen others from Europe, and twenty-two born in the Indian Territory. Ethnic groups in Glen Carbon often formed their own social organizations and sometimes clustered together in their own neighborhoods. Villagers called the area of Park, Summit and Austin streets "Little Italy," where residents prized their vineyards and grew grapes for homemade wine. Bohemians tended to settle in the Glen Crossing area, forming their own club at Meyer's tavern and dance hall.
