Mount Baker National Recreation Area in northwestern Washington protects about 8,600 acres around Mount Baker within the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, near the Canada–US border and northwest of North Cascades National Park. Established by Congress in 1984 alongside the adjacent Mount Baker Wilderness, it also reflects a longer forest administration history reaching back to 1893. The notably roadless area is reached on foot and is valued for hiking, climbing, camping, horse travel, and winter recreation. Its alpine glaciers, streams, forests, wildlife, and the presence of active volcanic Mount Baker give it a remote character and broad natural significance.
