Story Mound State Memorial in Chillicothe, Ohio, preserves a conical Native American burial mound built by the Adena culture, which lived in Ohio from about 800 B.C. to 100 A.D. Measuring about 95 feet across and 19.5 feet high, the mound once contained a circular wooden structure typical of Adena ceremonial earthworks. When archaeologist Clarence Loverberry excavated it in 1897, he found bark fragments, a ring of post holes, and a skeleton with jewelry, beads, and projectile points. Donated to the state in 1950 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973, it remains a protected archaeological site tied to the region’s early Native American past.
