Jack Johnson became the first African American heavyweight champion in 1908 by defeating Tommy Burns. On July 4, 1910, in front of 20,000 people in an outdoor ring in Reno, Johnson defeated ex-champ James Jeffries in what was then called the "Fight of the Century." He was a flamboyant and controversial figure in the early 20th Century. Ali often said he was influenced by Johnson. His pro record was 74 wins, 13 losses and 10 draws, with 40 wins by knockout.
