Established in 1849 by a joint stock company, Buffalo Academy had George Rosetter as its first principal. The school flourished until the Civil War began, when soldiers of the Federal and Confederate armies alternately occupied it. After the war, the property was deeded to the Buffalo District Board of Education. One student during the academy years, John McCausland, later became an illustrious Confederate general.
