Established in 1965 as the Red River Art Center in Moorhead, Minnesota, the Plains Art Museum received its current name in 1975. In 1996, it moved across the river into North Dakota and began renovating a former International Harvester warehouse into the art and cultural space known today. The museum has become an increasingly important community anchor in Downtown Fargo, offering free admission to 56,000 square feet filled with diverse art mediums. As the largest accredited art museum in North Dakota, it draws curious minds from around the world and connects art, artists, and audiences to foster creative, resilient, and welcoming communities. Hammel Green and Abrahamson, Inc., redesigned the International Harvester warehouse, and their award-winning work can also be found at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.
