Built in the 1940s, this building housed a Coca-Cola bottling plant rooted in a 1921 franchise sold by the Coca-Cola Company of Chattanooga for the sale and distribution of Cokes and other soda pop in Middlesex and six surrounding counties. Edward W. Chappell Jr. purchased the franchise, established a warehouse in Urbanna, and delivered soda pop across south-side Virginia. In 1923, Chappell built the town’s first Coca Cola bottling plant across from what is today the ABC store on Virginia Street. In 1944, Walter Sams of Coca-Cola Bottling Company Inc. of Richmond became principal owner and built this new bottling plant, which featured the most modern facilities at the time. The plant filled bottles with Coca-Cola and other brands of Crass orange and grape soda pop. Bottles embossed with “Urbanna” on the bottoms later became prized possessions of town residents. The plant closed in November 1963, and the buildings and grounds were sold and converted into lodging and restaurant facilities.
