The Peekskill meteorite, a stony H6 monomict breccia, fell in Peekskill, New York, on October 9, 1992, after crossing the East Coast sky as a greenish fireball witnessed by thousands. Its descent became one of the best-documented meteorite falls of modern times because 16 cameras captured it, allowing scientists to reconstruct its path and breakup. The stone slowed dramatically before smashing through the trunk of a parked red 1980 Chevrolet Malibu and landing beneath it. About 4.4 billion years old, it became famous both for the rare filmed record of its fall and for striking an ordinary car, which also became collectible.
