The Hazelton Post Office was established on July 6, 1903, at this site in the home of Elise Longpre Perras, who became Hazelton’s first postmaster after applying in June 1903 to open the new office in her home, where she later had a millinery shop. In December 1903, the nearby Williamsport Post Office, about 3 ½ miles northeast of Hazelton, closed and its delivery was taken over by the new Hazelton office. Williamsport had been bypassed by the Northern Pacific Railroad, causing its decline, while Hazelton had sprung up along the tracks. Mail arrived by train, and the post office site was described by its distance from the track.
