The Cumberland Valley Rail Trail is a multi-use recreational route operated by the non-profit Cumberland Valley Rails-to-Trails Council, Inc., offering walking, jogging, bicycling, horseback riding, and other non-motorized uses on a wheelchair-accessible trail between the historic towns of Shippensburg and Newville. Its surface is mostly crushed limestone, with pavement on the first mile from Fort Street to Shippensburg Township Park and on a half-mile section at the Newville trailhead, and road crossings have been graded to meet ADA specifications and paved where long grades required it. The trail passes through wooded areas and farmland, with a shaded picnic area in Oakville and additional picnic facilities, restrooms, and parking at Shippensburg Township Park and the Newville trailhead. Formerly a stretch of railroad tracks, the route from Shippensburg to Newville was donated by Conrail in 1995, after which the Cumberland Valley Rails-to-Trails Council began developing the former Cumberland Valley Railroad line into an improved trail for all ages and abilities. Sections between Shippensburg and Newville were completed in 2004 and 2006, and overpass bridges, trail extensions on both ends, and a culvert underpass near Newville were added in 2017, bringing the contiguous improved trail length to 11.1 miles from here to just past Centerville Road on the Newville end. The council has also purchased the old railroad corridor between Newville and Carlisle, completed a master plan to extend the trail and eventually connect the business districts of Shippensburg and Carlisle and the campuses of Shippensburg University and Dickinson College, and improved a one-mile section west from Allen Road in Carlisle that connects to the borough's bicycle and pedestrian network through the West End Trail.
