Pinellas National Wildlife Refuge is a 394-acre refuge on small offshore islands within St. Petersburg, Florida, accessible only by boat. Established in 1951 as a breeding ground for colonial birds, it includes Indian, Tarpon, Mule, and Jackass Keys. Brown pelicans, herons, egrets, cormorants, and many other birds nest there, and Tarpon Key contains Florida’s largest brown pelican rookery. Pinellas is one of three refuges in Tampa Bay, along with Passage Key and Egmont Key. Since 2012 it has been administered by the Crystal River Complex and remains closed to the public to protect its natural and cultural resources.
