Skyway Fishing Pier State Park
Transportation
2
Skyway Fishing Pier State Park stands at the mouth of Tampa Bay on the preserved north and south approaches of the former Sunshine Skyway Bridge. After a freighter struck a piling in 1980 and caused part of the original bridge to collapse, the crossing was replaced and the old approaches were adapted as public fishing piers, creating what is described as the longest fishing pier in the world. The park is known primarily for fishing, but it also attracts visitors for sightseeing and water sports. Age, corrosion, and exposure have led to closures and demolition of some sections, including part of the eastern pier in 2008.
