During the American Revolution, Major General the Marquis de Lafayette was ill for many weeks in the Brinckerhoff House adjoining this site. On this knoll stood the Middle Church, a Presbyterian church built in 1747, rebuilt in 1830, and burned in 1866. During the American Revolution, the church was used as a military hospital.
