Shawnee Indians from Ohio settled Sylacauga in 1748. They joined the Creek Confederacy, fought against the U.S. in the War of 1812, and were moved west in 1836. Before 1836, the area was also settled by men who had fought there under Andrew Jackson. The Indian name was Syllacogga or Chalakagay.
