In Terre Haute, Indiana, Paul Dresser’s birthplace and boyhood home preserves the early life of the singer, actor, and songwriter whose “On the Banks of the Wabash, Far Away” became Indiana’s state song in 1913. Built in 1850 for his parents, Johann Paul and Sarah Dreiser, the modest brick house reflects the working-class setting from which Dresser emerged before becoming a major popular composer of the 1890s who wrote more than 100 songs. Threatened by urban renewal in the 1960s, the house was saved, moved to Fairbanks Park, and recognized in 1967 as both a state shrine and memorial and a landmark of American music.
