Established in 1835 by James Power (1790-1870), Power's Ferry became part of Maj. Gen. O. O. Howard’s 4th A. C. of the Army of the Cumberland operations in July 1864. Howard’s force moved from Vining’s Station to this vicinity on July 9 and 10, 1864. Newton’s 2d division was diverted to Roswell to support Garrard’s cavalry, while Stanley’s 1st and Wood’s 3d divisions camped three miles north near Soap Creek on July 10. Stanley crossed the Chattahoochee on Schofield’s pontoon bridge at the mouth of Soap Creek and moved south on the other side to cover Power’s Ferry, where Wood crossed on a pontoon bridge on July 12. Newton, returning from Roswell, crossed on July 13. Stanley’s and Newton’s men built a trestle bridge at the upper island from July 14 to 16.
