Howard’s 4th A.C. was aligned along this ridge on Mt. Vernon Rd. from a point .5 mi. N.E. of Crossroads Ch. to 1.5 mi. S.W. at the river. These troops reached this ridge July 12, 13, 1864, after crossing the Chattahoochee at Power’s and Isom’s ferries. Hascall’s div. of the 23d A.C. was intrenched on Howard’s left along M. Vernon Rd. when both lines adjusted July 14. Sherman, from h’dq’rs here on July 17-18, directed the initial movements of Federal forces, from Roswell to Pace’s Ferry, toward Atlanta. From these environs the 23rd A.C. marched via Sandy Springs to Old Cross Keys on July 17; the 4th went by way of Power’s Fy. Rd. to Buckhead on July 18.
