Jefferson native Capt. Darrell Lindsey, on his 46th mission on Aug. 9, 1944, led a 30-plane group to attack a bridge near Paris, France, in World War II. Near the target his B-26 bomber's right engine took a direct hit from enemy fire. Due to skillful piloting, he was able to lead the bomber group in the completion of the mission. His crew parachuted to safety but he went down with his burning plane. His body was never recovered.
