Pine Knob, a 1,201-foot hill near Clarkston in Independence Township, Michigan, is both a prominent landform and a long-developed recreation district. Its modern transformation began in 1927 when Colonel Sidney D. Waldon bought 840 acres and built an English manor, carriage house, and barns, with the main estate buildings still standing as an event venue. The hill became regionally known for its ski resort, golf course, and especially its outdoor amphitheater, which opened in 1972 and regained the Pine Knob name in 2022. Residential neighborhoods around these amenities reflect nearly a century of intertwined natural terrain, private development, and public leisure.
