At Crown Point in 1759 and 1765, a major wooden fort built with timber and earth was described as being constructed in a most masterly manner, with five bastions, 105 guns, casements for 4,000 men, and stores for provisions de Guerre et de Bouche for four months. Its walls were said to be 25 feet thick and planned to rise twenty feet high, enclosing four and three quarters acres, with a trench about 30 feet wide and intended to be 14 feet deep. Within the fort stood good stone barracks for officers and men that would conveniently contain 500 men, while three small forts were also under construction. Work on the defenses was relentless, with men kept hard at labor every day until cold weather might drive them away.
