On Aug. 19, 1854, Sioux Indians killed 29 soldiers and their officer, Brevet 2nd Lt. L. Grattan. The site is one-half mile northwest. The conflict began after an Indian killed a cow from a Mormon caravan, and a detachment of soldiers was sent to receive the offender. In the ensuing fight, all the soldiers and the chief of the Brule’s Sioux, Marton-Ioway, were killed.
