Built in 1895, St. Francis Catholic Church was the first Euro-American Roman Catholic church in the county. The church stood in a Polish village on land given by Mrs. Frank Seerden and her nephew Zeflick "Z" Butter. After its destruction in the 1896 hurricane, it was rebuilt. Later research corrected the original identification of the land donors.
