Ragged Point Light stood as a screw-pile lighthouse in Maryland’s Potomac River and became notable as the last lighthouse built in Maryland waters and the last established at a new Chesapeake Bay site. Though first requested in 1896, it was delayed for years until funding was secured in 1906 and supplemented with an additional $5,000. Construction finally began in 1910, and the light was commissioned that March. In the early 1960s, aircraft from Patuxent Naval Air Station mistakenly strafed the lighthouse during training before being waved off by the keepers. In 1962, the lighthouse house was dismantled and replaced with a tower on its original foundation.
