Near Boones Mill, Virginia, the Jubal A. Early House is a historic house and archaeological site best known as the childhood home of Confederate General Jubal Early. Built in the first decade of the 19th century and enlarged after 1847, when it left the Early family, the two-story, four-bay frame house has a side-gable roof and a rear ell that creates a T-shaped plan. It once stood on a tobacco plantation of more than 4,000 acres managed by Early’s father, Joab Early, linking early Virginia plantation life with the later public memory of Jubal Early.
