The bodies of three Confederate cavalrymen killed during the Battle of Washington on July 24, 1863, were laid to rest here by the citizens of Washington under public authority after a force commanded by Confederate General John Morgan was overtaken and defeated by Federal cavalrymen commanded by General James M. Shackelford.
