Where a road crossed a creek at an angle, builders constructed a stone arch bridge at right angles to the stream flow. They then built S-shaped walls to guide traffic from the road onto the bridge and back onto the road line. Building an arch parallel with the stream flow and in line with the road would have been more difficult and costly.
