Buckner Mountain is a prominent high summit in Washington’s North Cascades, rising about 9,114 feet within North Cascades National Park and forming the highest point in Skagit County. One of the state’s few non-volcanic peaks above 9,000 feet, it has two nearly equal summits and stands on the boundary of Chelan and Skagit counties. The mountain divides water flowing west to the Skagit River from water flowing east into the Columbia system, and it is surrounded by heavily glaciated terrain. Named for Henry Freeland Buckner, it reflects the North Cascades’ rugged landscape shaped by tectonic uplift, faulting, and repeated Pleistocene glaciation.
