Designed and built by Eli Cox, the Cutler-Donahoe Covered Bridge dates to 1870. It is 79 feet long and weighs 40 tons, with a covered timber superstructure, a Towne lattice truss with overlay queenpost frame, and fastenings of round wooden pins and iron bolts. Originally located 18 miles northeast of Winterset near Bevington over the North River, it was moved to Winterset City Park in 1970. Before the first covered bridge festival, Clair Rogers of Macksburg, Iowa, a house mover commissioned to move the bridge, gave his time to rebuild the west one-third of the structure and re-roof it. Covered bridges were often named for nearby residents, and both the Cutler and Donahoe families claimed naming rights, giving the bridge its hyphenated name.
