Holliwell Covered Bridge spans the Middle River near Winterset, Iowa, and, completed in 1880, is the longest surviving covered bridge in Madison County and the longest remaining timber bridge in Iowa. It replaced an earlier bridge built at this crossing in 1854–55 that was destroyed in the flood of 1876, after which travelers forded the river for several years. Built by county bridge foreman Harvey P. Jones and George K. Foster, the bridge is notable for its Town lattice truss with a superimposed arch and its unusual use of metal fasteners. After carrying traffic for more than a century, it was bypassed in 1986, listed on the National Register in 1976, and restored in 1995.
