THE STORY



Designated as the executive residence by the Provisional Confederate Congress on February 21, 1861, this house was the home of President Jefferson Davis and his family until the Confederate capital moved to Richmond in the summer of 1861. It was built by William Sayre between 1832 and 1835 at Bibb and Lee Streets, then moved to its present location by the First White House Association and dedicated on June 3, 1921.
