On September 11, 1851, the Christiana Riot occurred, followed by treason trials from September 29 to December 17, 1851. Indicted for treason in the U.S. Circuit Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania on August 1, 1851, were Gastiner Hanway, Joseph Scarlet, Elijah Lewis, James Jackson, George Williams, Jacob Moore, George Reed, Benjamin Johnson, Daniel Caulsberry, Alson Pernsley, William Brown, 2nd, Henry Green, Elijah Clark, John Holliday, William Williams, Benj. Pindergrast, John Morgan, Ezekiel Thompson, Thomas Butler, Collister Wilson, John Jackson, William Brown, Isaiah Clarkson, Henry Sims, Charles Hunter, Lewis Gates, Peter Woods, Lewis Clarkson, Nelson Carter, William Parker, John Berry, William Berry, Samuel Williams, Josh Hammond, Henry Curtis, Wash. Williams, William Thomas, and Nelson Ford. Castner Hanway was tried from November 24 to December 11, 1851, and was found not guilty; he suffered for freedom. Edward Gorsuch was killed and died for law, Dickson Gorsuch was wounded, and they and Joshua Gorsuch were father and sons of Baltimore County, Maryland.
