For many years Old City Cemetery had fallen into neglect because the City of Plano was unable to determine ownership, leaving the historic site in legal and financial limbo. Over the years The Plano Conservancy for Historic Preservation Inc. held workshops and public events there that increased awareness and civic involvement. In May 2015, the cemetery hosted Tombstone Mysteries, with flower-planting, educational gravestone tours, and hands-on gravestone cleaning and restoration for Plano citizens of all ages. Also in 2015, with encouragement from The Plano Conservancy for Historic Preservation Inc., The Plano Old City Cemetery Association was formed to take over stewardship of the site. This allowed The Plano Conservancy for Historic Preservation Inc. and The Plano Old City Cemetery Association to acquire grants from the City of Plano Heritage Commission for restoration. In the autumn of 2015, a new fence and pedestrian walkway were installed, and the stones and memorials were repaired and cleaned over the winter of 2015/2016 by James "Rusty" Brenner of Texas Cemetery Restoration. The Plano Old City Cemetery Association is a non-profit, non-perpetual care cemetery association organized by descendants of those buried there and concerned local citizens.
