Odakota Mountain is a summit in the Black Hills of western South Dakota, about nine miles west of Hill City, and at 7,197.70 feet above sea level it is the second-highest point in both the Black Hills and the state. Its official name is recent: before 1969 no name was recorded for the peak, though it was locally known as Murphy Mountain. Evelyn Loretta Bradfelt petitioned for the name Odakota Mountain, understanding it as an indigenous word tied to peace, and later research linked it to Dakota and Lakota terms for friendship, alliance, and peaceful relationship. Its importance lies in both its elevation and the story of its naming.
