The Army of Northern Virginia's Cavalry Division was Stuart's Division under Major General J.E.B. Stuart and included Hampton's Brigade under Brigadier General Wade Hampton and Colonel L. S. Baker, Robertson's Brigade under Brigadier General Beverly H. Robertson, Fitz Lee's Brigade under Brigadier General Fitzhugh Lee, Jenkins's Brigade under Brigadier General A.G. Jenkins and Colonel M.J. Ferguson, Jones's Brigade under Brigadier General William E. Jones, W.H.F. Lee's Brigade under Colonel J.R. Chambliss, Jr., and Stuart's Horse Artillery of six batteries under Major R.F. Beckham. Robertson's and Jones's Brigades with three batteries were detached and operating on the right flank of the army. On July 1, the division, marching from Dover to Carlisle, received information that the Confederate army was concentrating at Gettysburg. On July 2, the advance near Gettysburg late in the afternoon engaged Custer's Cavalry Brigade at Hunterstown on the left and rear of Early's Division. On July 3, pursuant to orders, the cavalry division of four brigades took position on the left in advance of Early on a ridge controlling the open ground toward Hanover, where Gregg's Union cavalry was massed in full view; sharpshooters were advanced and soon became engaged, and the battle continued until near night and was hotly contested. That night the division withdrew to the York Road. On July 4, the division was posted on the flanks and rear of the army. Its casualties were 36 killed, 140 wounded, 64 missing, for a total of 240.
