Louis Joseph "Eugene" Carpellotti of Old Forge, Pa., born Feb. 13, 1918, enlisted in the Marine Corps Sept. 22, 1940. As U.S.M.C. Private First Class Carpellotti, he was killed in action at Tulagi, Solomon Islands, on 7 August 1942 when he led a detachment to deliver flanking fire on a Japanese position, enabling the rest of his squad to assault and capture it. For his heroic action in connection with his death during the Tulagi landing, he was awarded the Silver Star Medal. The ship Destroyer Escort No. 720, launched at DeFoe, Bay City, Michigan, was named in his honor, and its sponsor was Mrs. Sophie Carpellotti. The anchor preserved in his memory was taken from the named ship USS Carpellotti, which served during World War II.
