The Mount Vernon Ladies' Association was founded in 1853 as the first national historic preservation organization and the first women's patriotic society in the United States. Its pioneering preservation efforts set an important precedent that has inspired many communities. Its mission is to preserve, restore, and manage George Washington's estate to the highest standards. Today, thanks to the Association's early vision, twenty original structures are cared for, including the Mansion, Tombs, and most outbuildings, offering a direct connection to the life and legacy of George Washington.
