Exciting Discoveries
Fort Hunt, Virginia
History
As part of the privately funded Mansion Revitalization Project, archaeologists discovered multiple intact 18th-century bottles in the cellar, a rare find whose preliminary analysis revealed complete cherries, pits, and stems. Unseen since before the war for American Independence, the bottles were recovered from several pits, where they may have been forgotten beneath a brick floor laid in the 1770s. This significant archaeological discovery offers valuable insight into the lives and labors of Mount Vernon's 18th-century residents, including the Washingtons, their guests, and the enslaved individuals who prepared the contents and buried the bottles.
