Southern soldiers, few in number, who were slain in this and adjoining counties during the War of Secession rest here. They fell among strangers, unknown and unfriended, yet not unhonored, for strangers gathered their ashes here and placed this shaft above them so that their constancy, valor, and sacrifice of self, though displayed in fruitless enterprise, would not be unremembered. Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and Texas are named with them.
