Haystack Mountain
Nature
Haystack Mountain is a flat-topped mesa about 4 miles east of Prewitt in western New Mexico, a prominent high point in the Zuni Mountains on the southeastern edge of the Colorado Plateau. Its summit reaches 7,833 feet and stands out clearly in the surrounding landscape. The mesa and its surroundings carry both archaeological and industrial significance. The Haystack Archaeological District on its side preserves an Ancestral Puebloan dwelling dating from about 500 to 1500 AD and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In the modern era, the surrounding region formed part of one of the nation’s most productive uranium districts from 1950 to 1980.
