Built in 1921 in the coal camp of Pemberton, West Virginia, this church was paid for by coal baron Thomas Hurst Wickham and given to the community as its center for worship and gatherings such as homecomings, meetings, church dinners, and summer Bible school. The minister was an integral part of community life, marrying couples, preaching on Sunday, visiting people during the week, and burying them. After Christmas services, each person leaving received a gift of fruit and candy from the coal company, a custom that still survives in some small Appalachian country churches.
