Buchanan County covers 514 square miles and was formed in 1858 from Tazewell and Russell counties, taking its name from James Buchanan, President of the United States from 1857 to 1861. Russell County covers 496 square miles and was formed in 1786 from Washington County, taking its name from General William Russell, a pioneer and Revolutionary soldier. The Clinch River runs through Russell County.
