Anna Hyatt Huntington preferred sculpting animals over human figures, writing in a diary entry on July 3, 1941, that animals offered tremendous variety while figures were so alike that only pose varied them. She used only live models for her sculpting, and these pens temporarily housed bears or other animals while she worked.
