South Britain Congregational Church began with twenty nine persons who in 1761 petitioned the General Assembly for four months of winter preaching after traveling to Southbury for thirty years. The first pastor was Jehu Minor. The first South Britain Ecclesiastic Society meeting was held on June 5th, 1766. In 1770 the first meeting house was built on the green south of this structure. This meeting house was built in 1825, its interior was renovated in 1869 while retaining the original "globe ceiling," and a memorial stained glass window was installed in 1903.
